Nikita Nightingale, from Chadburn in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, collapsed on wasteland near to the town's Walton Community School where she was a pupil.
Two girls and two boys she was with raised the alarm.
The youngster was taken by ambulance to Peterborough District Hospital on Wednesday afternoon but died less than an hour later.
Cambridgeshire police say they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, which happened on derelict ground behind Churchfield Court.

A special assembly in memory of the teenager is being held on Thursday, led by headteacher Martin Cragg.
Friends and classmates of the 14-year-old are being offered counselling to help them come to terms with the tragedy.
In a statement Peterborough Education Authority said: "It's with deepest regret that we can confirm that a 14-year-old pupil from Walton Community School died while absent from the school site.
"Everyone at the school, the headteacher, teachers and pupils offer their sincere condolences to the young person's family and friends.
The results of a post mortem examination are not expected to be released until Friday.
