| Monday, 18 June, 2001, 11:04 GMT 12:04 UK Heathrow near miss report denied ![]() Heathrow is the world's busiest airport The Civil Aviation Authority is denying a report that two passenger planes came within 40ft of colliding at London's Heathrow Airport last week. A British Airways Boeing 747 was coming in to land when it had to avoid an Air Canada jumbo, according to The Mirror newspaper. But the CAA said that due to the length of the runway the two aircraft were more than two miles apart at their closest point. There were 380 passengers on the BA jumbo and 181 on the other plane.
A "go around" is a procedure used by air traffic controllers or pilots when they are not satisfied with the approach. A BA spokesman also insisted the planes were two miles apart and that none of the passengers had been in any danger. Experts have warned of an increase in near misses in the crowded skies over south-east England. Last week, an air traffic controller supervising a trainee was blamed after a jumbo came within 112ft of colliding with another plane at Heathrow. The British Airways 747 had been cleared to land on the same runway that a British Midland jet, taking 89 passengers to Belgium in April last year, was using to take off. |
