Tens of thousands of people watched as old and new aircraft took part in the RAF's 80th anniversary celebrations.

The RAF was first formed on 1 April 1918, when it became the world's first independent air force.

Servicemen past and present are at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire for the weekend series of ground and air displays.

Aircraft from nearly every RAF squadron along with pilots from across the world are present at the event, which has grown hugely since it was first held in 1971.

The Red Arrows in Eurofighters

One of the star attractions was a stunt show from the Red Arrows team which accompanied the only flying Eurofighter on a single flypast.

This year's tattoo includes a re-enactment of the Berlin Airlift to mark the 50th anniversary of the historic event when the Allied forces delivered more than two million tons of supplies to the German capital in June 1948 despite a Russian blockade.
