| Friday, 11 May, 2001, 13:53 GMT 14:53 UK Elephant victim's death accidental ![]() Elephants performing moments before the attack A student nurse killed by an elephant while holidaying in Thailand died accidentally, an inquest has decided. Andrea Taylor, 20, suffered fatal internal injuries after she was attacked by the rampaging elephant in April last year. Her father, Geoff, and sister, Helen, were also seriously injured in the accident at a tourist tropical garden park on the Thai resort of Pattaya. The terrifying moment when the bull elephant charged at the Taylor family at the private-run Suan Nong Nuch park was captured on video. The footage, recorded by an amateur cameraman, was shown to the inquest at St Helen's Coroner's Court on Friday.
Miss Taylor, of Billinge, Merseyside, died later in hospital. Her 23-year-old sister, who suffered internal injuries, underwent surgery. The video footage was later broadcast on television. Elephant rampage Miss Taylor's family wept as the bull elephant was seen repeatedly butting the front row of tourists with its head and tusks. The images were accompanied by an interview with Miss Taylor's father and sister.
Describing what happened as he comforted his daughter, Mr Taylor said: "She said, `Don't let anyone move me, Dad. There's something wrong with my back'. "When I looked down I could see there was something wrong with her side and there was blood coming out. "She said, `My legs are going numb', and I looked down and saw it was stripped to the bone. "I said, `You've got a broken leg, don't worry, I think you'll be alright.' "Then she said, `I'm going blind'." The inquest, before St Helen's coroner Christopher Sumner, heard medical evidence that Miss Taylor died from massive internal injuries, probably caused by the elephant's tusk. The coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death on the Huddersfield University student. |
