WALES The number of beaches in Wales which fail the EU minimum water quality standards have more than doubled this year, from 12 to 26. At the same time the number of recommended beaches have increased from 58 to 60, out of 188 sampled.

NORTHERN IRELAND One beach out of the 25 sampled failed to reach the minimum EU water quality standards in Northern Ireland. No beaches failed last year. Eleven of the beaches gained recommended status.

MCS officials monitored 806 British beaches for the quality of their bathing water every two weeks between May and September 2000.
