| Monday, 30 April, 2001, 06:59 GMT 07:59 UK Call for pledge on prison numbers ![]() Prisons should provide a "positive experience" General election candidates must promise to work towards cutting the number of prison inmates or face being "named and shamed" a campaign group has warned. The Howard League for Penal Reform wants more community sentences and fewer jail terms and says it will publish the names of any candidates who refuse to support these aims.
The Howard League has listed five principles it wants candidates to endorse. They are that:
Details of the manifesto will be published later on Monday. The league's director Frances Crook told the BBC: "The Howard League is very open and accountable. "We are pleased to make publicly available the information that we gather as to who supports us and who doesn't." |
