Punter loses 3m lottery prize
National lottery ticket
The ticket was purchased in South Hertfordshire
A "deeply disappointed" lottery punter has forfeited their right to a 3m prize because of a lost ticket.

Camelot has acknowledged that the person probably did purchase the ticket in South Hertfordshire which went unclaimed for more than six months.

After a long period of deliberation, Camelot, the National Lottery operators, have decided the punter will not receive the prize.

A Camelot spokeswoman confirmed: "Circumstances tend to indicate that this player had purchased the ticket.

'Deeply disappointed'

"We took legal advice to ascertain if we had any discretion about paying out on the ticket and we found that we have none.

Lost tickets have cost lottery punters 400m in unclaimed prizes

"The person involved is deeply disappointed, and it has been a very difficult situation for us."

Camelot have remained tightlipped about the identify of the person involved, not even saying whether the purchaser was a man or a woman.

Neither would they say how they were able to ascertain that the person involved was telling the truth when they said they bought the ticket.

The ticket with numbers 6, 7, 11, 23, 32 and 44 was bought in south Hertfordshire on 6 September last year.

The person who purchased it did not claim that their ticket was lost within the 30 day deadline, though they did come forward within a 180-day deadline for claiming the prize.

By the time the deadline came around, 115 different people came forward to claim the prize.

Since the Lottery began in 1994, players have lost out on almost 400m in unclaimed prize money, which has gone to good causes.
