| Tuesday, 3 April, 2001, 00:17 GMT 01:17 UK Glowing report on youth jail ![]() Sir David Ramsbotham praised the institution A young offenders' institution has been named a centre of excellence by the chief inspector of prisons after it received a glowing report. Sir David Ramsbotham gave the accolade after inspectors described Swinfen Hall YOI, near Lichfield, Staffordshire, as an example to other institutions.
Their report said Swinfen Hall was a place "in which the needs as well as the characteristics of young, adolescent prisoners, are understood and catered for". It also praised anti-bullying schemes and programmes which examine offending behaviour. The prison opened in February 1963 as a borstal. In 1972 it became a long term young offenders' institution. The regime includes education, workshops, farms and gardens, and a works department. |
