| Friday, 30 March, 2001, 14:22 GMT 15:22 UK 'Untreatable' paedophile released ![]() Paedophile Andrew Wyer reported contact with children to police A paedophile who warned authorities he might re-offend if freed from prison has been released back into the community under strict supervision. Andrew Wyer, 33, from Southsea, Hampshire, appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday for breaking an order banning him from contacting young people. Judge David Selwood sentenced Wyer, who had been held at Broadmoor psychiatric hospital since January 2000, to two years' probation under constant supervision and police monitoring at a secure unit.
Judge Selwood said: "There was a breach but it came to light when you yourself reported your contact with children to the police. "The contact you had was just that, contact. It was a meeting with children of a man at his home, not just one meeting but several. "You were never left alone with the children and the most that happened was that on one occasion you asked one of the children if she was ticklish. "I am bound to take the view, it seems to me, that the breach of the sex offenders' order was not in itself a grave breach but remained a very worrying breach. "The fact does remain that you are assessed by the experts as having a form of mental disorder and a personality defect and as being a grave risk to the public and your criminal record is bad." Derek Flintham, 60, who was instead sentenced to five years, was caught with the 11-year-old when police visited his home during a routine call to question him about the Sarah Payne murder. Judge Stephen Robbins, sitting at Snaresbrook Crown Court in east London, told Flintham he could not pass a life sentence under which the paedophile could be held in custody until he was deemed safe to return to the community. Flintham's offence was also at the lower end of the scale of indecent assault - but as he presented a risk to the public, his jail term would be longer than usual, the judge added. |
