Warhammer: Age of Reckoning has becomes a game on the web, 25 years after the series began as a tabletop contest.
It enters a crowded market, with World of Warcraft being the most popular multi-player online game.
Paul Barnett, Preston-born creative director at WAR developer Mythic, said much effort has gone into trying to make its title stand out.
The history of Warhammer itself, he said, has helped with this distinctiveness. Warhammer started out as a rule set for those who run tabletop fantasy battles with miniatures.
Warhammer has expanded to become many different things, but Mr Barnett said it has retained its Britishness and that feel has been carried over into the online game.
