It is 40 years since Donald Davies first talked publically about his research into the way information is sent electronically over networks.
Data packet switching allows information to travel in chunks. It is the method used to transfer information between computers over the internet.
In 1982 the minister for technology, Kenneth Baker, paid tribute to Dr Davies' work during a visit to the National Physical Laboratory.
