The iBot will make wheelchair users more mobile

The US-made Independence iBot 3000 has gone on display at the Independent Living exhibition at London's Wembley Conference Centre.

The chair uses six gyroscopes to keep itself balanced and stable, even while moving around on two wheels.

The gyroscopes make sure the seat is level and steady underneath the user regardless of what is happening to the wheels.

Easy reach

The manufacturers, Independence Technology, hope the chair will really help wheelchair users go about their daily life much more easily.

"It's all about quality of life," James McEwan, Independence Technology's Market Development Director told BBC News Online.

Its wheels are designed for rugged terrain

The makers say that the special balancing feature means people will be able to reach supermarket shelves or kitchen cupboards much more easily.

Its ability to climb kerbs and whole flights of stairs will also take much of the strain and frustration out of planning journeys too.

The chair has a joystick which can be removed and turned into a wired remote control so that it can be driven into a vehicle

"People will be able to leave the house with pretty high confidence that they'll be able to get wherever they want to during the day," Mr McEwan said.

At �22,000 the iBot's price tag is higher than that of the average family car, and will go on sale in the UK later this year.
