Captain Scarlet is indestructible

The classic TV series, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, is being turned into a video game by a British company.

It will be a tactical strategy game, pitching the heroes of the world security force Spectrum against the Mysteron Menace.

The title is due to be released for the PC in the summer.

Captain Scarlet has captured the imagination of audiences across the for world nearly 40 years, with its mix of science fiction and action adventure.

The puppets created by Gerry Anderson brought to life a world where the Earth's only defence against the Mysterons was the indestructible Captain Scarlet and his colleagues at Spectrum.

Nostalgic appeal

The series has had enduring appeal, through TV repeats, being released on video and a toy range.

Chance to fly classic vehicles

The game designers are hoping to capitalise on Captain Scarlet's popularity by following a familiar path to the TV programme.

In the game, players will be able to take on the role of Captain Scarlet or other Spectrum agents to battle the Mysteron across a range of levels .

Gamers will also be able to indulge their nostalgia by taking control of vehicles such as Angel Interceptors and the legendary Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle.

The game is being developed by British game designers Batfish Studios, who are based in Banbury in Oxfordshire.

"Captain Scarlet is as entertaining and relevant now as it was when it was first broadcast 35 years ago," said Philip Harris, Lead Developer at Batfish Studios.

"With such a strong background to work from we've been able to design a game which will appeal to gamers of all ages, whether they are familiar with Captain Scarlet or not."

The game for the PC is expected to be in the shops in the summer.
