The United Nations is involved in peacekeeping missions around the world.

Some say the UN's credibility was seriously undermined by failures in Angola, Bosnia and Somalia.

Others say it is too slow to intervene in some conflicts. Today the UN has fifteen operations in areas from Kosovo to East Timor with soldiers and police officials from 87 countries.

Since 1948 over 1,700 UN peacekeepers have lost their lives.

What is the role of the UN peacekeepers? Does UN peacekeeping work? Should it intervene more in areas like the Middle East? Or should the UN stop sending forces to regional and internal conflicts?

We discussed the role of UN peacekeeping on our global interactive phone-in programme broadcast online, on the BBC World Service and on Digital television in the UK. We were joined by Sir Marrack Goulding, former head of UN peacekeeping.

This debate is now closed.
