The National Union of Teachers have announced a one-day walkout on 14 March in a move condemned by the government.

Union general secretary Doug McAvoy says that schools in London and the fringe areas are struggling to recruit and retain enough teachers because salaries don't match the cost of living.

But the education secretary, Estelle Morris, argues teachers in London have had a 35% rise in allowances since Labour came to power. A teacher's starting salary there will soon be �20,000.

Ms Morris warned teachers not to return to the "dark ages of dispute and conflict" in the classroom.
