 | What has happened to this amazing country of Saudi Arabia? |
On a hot 4th June Friday in Saudi Arabia myself and several other expats gathered for a BBQ. Including our friends Frank Gardner and Simon Cumbers. The day was nice the company terrific. Little did I know then that this was to be the last Friday that Simon would spent on this earth, nor that this was the last Friday before Frank would be critically injured and his life changed forever.
During our day we talked about many things including the dangers of our lives and Simon's and Frank's. They said this is our job, to bring the news to the people. I asked were they afraid, the reply was, "Yes sometimes". Like us we are now afraid of going many places. Frank had enormous knowledge of this country and for Simon it was brand new. Frank said something to me that will probably haunt me forever; he said "One never knows you can be in the wrong place at the wrong time". How right he was.
This killing was senseless, terrible, and unnecessary. What has happened to this amazing country of Saudi Arabia? This place I call my home. For Simon's family our deepest sympathy, and for Frank, we wish him a speedy full recovery. Our thoughts and wishes are for him and his family.

I was shocked to hear of the attack on Frank Gardner. I have known him in Bahrain and have ever since followed his reports on the Middle East. He is a fabulous guy and has a great understanding of Middle Eastern life. I wish him a speedy recovery. Frank, Amanda and the kids are in our thoughts.

Tough it out Frank; I know you will. Sorry I haven't been in touch since 1979! However, Fleur, my wife, and I have naturally seen a lot of you on TV and heard you on Radio 4.
We particularly enjoyed one report you did on the US Special Forces in training. Two soldiers tried to burst through an open doorway and got stuck! It was quite hilarious and very much reminded me of the kind of humour we used to enjoy during our Marlborough days. When you're better we'd like to see more of this sort of thing please!
All the very best. Fleur, myself and Eleanor Savage are all thinking of you.

The shooting of Simon Cumbers and Frank Gardner in Riyadh came as a terrible shock and our thoughts are with their families. Frank is a good friend and always kept in touch during his foreign assignments, usually to email me his latest bird report! He was a keen and experienced birdwatcher and submitted the first bird sightings to come out of Iraq for many years during his visits last year.
His BBC reports from Arabia kept me glued to the radio as he knew exactly what was going on and wasn't afraid to relay it to the world. His knowledge of the Middle East and his fluency in Arabic gave his reports more credence than anyone else could provide. He didn't deserve this - everyone liked Frank and we pray for his speedy recovery.

Sincere condolences to Simon Cumbers' family and my best wishes to Frank's family. I used to work with Frank and always enjoyed his clear sightedness on the Arab World and particularly his sense of humour. What a shock to hear of this terrible tragedy. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

I have been watching BBC World regularly for over three years now. My condolences to Simon's family. Hats off to him and Frank Gardner, for the kind of professionalism they have displayed. This is journalism of the highest standards, in arguably the most trying circumstances. Perhaps no one knew more about the terror threats in Saudi Arabia, better than Frank himself. Well done. Get well soon. Wish you lots and lots of luck and good recovery. I'll pray for you. God bless you.

I knew Frank in his banking days, and remember fondly many lunches where he talked enthusiastically about becoming a journalist. I have followed him since on my TV screen and was shocked to hear the news of the attack. I join everyone in wishing him a fast recovery and hope to see him back reporting soon.

Frank is an ex-colleague of mine from his banking days. I always admired him for his take on life which reflected in his high professionalism both as a banker and the intrepid and incisive reporter that he turned out to be. My prayers are for his early recovery, good health and back on our screens. My sincere condolence to the Cumbers family, may God give them the strength to come to terms with this great loss.

My sincere condolences to Simon's family. As a Muslim I regret this thing happened. If the gunmen were Muslims then I consider them as moronic Muslim fanatics who don't deserve to be called Muslims.
