Noel Redding, bass player for 1960s rock legend Jimi Hendrix, has died aged 57. His death was announced by his manager Ian Grant on his record company website although the cause of death was not given.
Noel Redding, drummer Mitch Mitchell and guitarist Jimi Hendrix formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience which made its album debut in 1967 with Are You Experienced.
Since the group was dissolved by Hendrix in 1970, Redding had attempted to win royalties for some of his recordings and in February announced that he planned to sue the company looking after the Hendrix back catalogue.

Noel was a great inspiration |
I'm very sad to hear about Noel. I was lucky enough to tour the UK with him and Eric Bell in 1998, and to arrange lots of Fender promotional events with him to mark his much deserved signature series bass guitar. Noel was a great inspiration, and I feel proud and lucky to have known him. Love to Deborah and everyone that was a friend to Noel. As he used to say, good luck!
Dave Glover, UK Such a shame...loved him with the Experience. Met him a few years back in London. Kept in contact by mail every now and again. Rest easy Noel.
Bari Watts, England
Sadly for us but happily for Hendrix now they'll eternally jam, along with Keith Moon on drums, John Entwistle, John Bonham, singing with Lennon, Harrison, Morrison, Joplin and all the great legends we miss so much but never really left us for their legacy remains timeless and lives in our hearts and flows in the air and fills the space, the universe in any possible existing dimension...God bless them all...

He'll be remembered and loved as a brother and an uncle |
Noel is already being missed by all the family, it's been a real shock to us all. It's amazing to see all the tributes though, and to know that so many people are thinking of him now that he has joined the musicians' freedom party in the sky! He'll be remembered and loved as a brother and an uncle. ...Love and peace... Anthony, Alex, Merlin, Oliver and Lace.
Merlin Redding, England I was very lucky to have met Noel after a show he performed with an Experience tribute band in the north of Italy in 1996. We talked about life, music, the past and the future, and were lucky enough to jam till the early hours. For me the whole experience of that evening and for me to find out what the man behind the pictures and recordings that I have grown up with was an amazing experience. I don't think he realised how much my fellow musicians and I appreciated his time and him being so open to strangers. This world has lost another one of the TRUE musicians left.

One of rock's most underappreciated musicians |
When I was 19 years old, Noel Redding played a show in a small dive in upstate New York just a few miles from my home. Too young to be allowed entry for the show, I had to wait outside to meet Mr. Redding. When he finally emerged, he was clearly exhausted, but he still found the time to share a few minutes and sign a vinyl copy of "Electric Ladyland." I always remembered how nice Noel Redding had been. Fifty-seven is far too young for anyone to die, especially for one of rock's most underappreciated musicians.
Crispin Kott, USA I am deeply shocked at the sudden death of Noel Redding, who along with Jimi Hendrix and Mitch Mitchell constituted the greatest rock band of all time. We saw him on several occasions when he returned to the US to appear in various tributes to Hendrix. His presence as a direct link to the Hendrix legacy will be greatly missed.
Robert L. Norfolk, Jr., USA
I've known Noel on and off for a number of years. He was gracious enough to be in my TV demo pilot reminiscing about the days when he was in the Jimi Hendrix Experience. He will be sorely missed.
May Pang, USA
I am absolutely dismayed at the news. My condolences go out to everyone associated with Mr. Redding. No one will ever replace him. No one will ever again see the like.
Irving Nelson Canfield, USA
I am stunned to learn the man who laid the foundation for Hendrix's free-wheeling guitar magic has died. The Experience were by far the greatest of the power trios.

It feels like we have lost a friend |
I met Noel this time last year in De Barras bar in Clonakilty, Co. Cork. My wife Shirley and I saw him on the first. Friday of our hols and enjoyed his (Free) set immensely but did not pluck up the nerve to approach him after the gig. The next Friday I plucked up the courage. Expecting a re-buff from another fan encroaching on his personal time, I was greatly surprised. He took the time to talk and immediately agreed to have his photo taken with myself and my wife. His politeness and genuine offer of his time (Even insisting I take another photo, 'Always take 2, Paul McCartney told me that') made my holiday even better than it had been. A really nice person, friendly and such a good musician, my wife and I are so sad at his death. It feels like we have lost a friend.
Jack Ledger, England As a teenager in the nineties I was fascinated with the music of the sixties. While I worshipped Jimi's guitar playing it was Noel that struck me as the definition of Sixties British Cool. He had the wit but also the warmth and his bass playing reflected that. Rest in the knowledge that you were loved the world over, Noel.
Richard Lee, UK
Noel, Mitch and Jimi gave the world three great albums. Their contribution to music today cannot be underestimated and equal to the Beatles and the Rolling stones. I had the pleasure of meeting Noel who was a sensitive and unassuming person who liked to talk to his fans . A sad day for music
Ken Sinyard, UK
It has been an honour and a privilege to have represented Noel Redding, who gave so much to the world. Like Jimi Hendrix, he certainly gave more than he received. Like so many other great artists, it is sad that he will be appreciated more in death than he was in life.

I cut my teeth on Noel's chops |
My prayers are with the family and also with Noel, that he rest in peace. Although I was only in grade school back in the mid to late 60s, when The Experience was climbing the charts, I've been a huge fan most all my life. As a life-long bassist, I cut my teeth on Noel's chops and still listen to The Jimi Hendrix Experience today; The best there ever was and ever will be! Just ask the Axis. He knows everything!
Mark Normand, United States of America Once again another shock in the music world. Another great bass player has died. First, John Entwistle and now Noel Redding. Noel was clearly a muscian's musician who took the role of bass guitarist without griping. He was a phenomenal guitarist as well, if you've ever had the pleasure of listening to him. He will be missed.
Gianni Lipkins, USA
I met Noel several years ago in Boston. He was the keynote speaker at NEMO. That night he also performed and I had the chance to talk with him and get a photo. Great guy, hell of a Bass Player. He will be missed
Mark Trout, USA
With great sadness another rock Icon departs from us. Fond memories of a long chat with Noel at the Hanover Pub Liverpool 11/09/98 while playing with John Couglin ( Ex Status Quo) & Eric Bell ( Ex Thin Lizzie) , What a Night!!! Still took time to talk with great passion about JIMI. Now he's upstairs reunited with the great man himself. Both sadly missed.

Noel Redding's pounding bass helped define an era |
On a warm Summer's night in 1967, the Summer of Love, I had the pleasure of listening to John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, Albert King and, The Jimi Hendrix Experience at San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium. Noel Redding's pounding bass helped define an era. My memories will keep him alive forever!
Ross Glen, USA I was a big fan and very sorry for Noel's loss. His bass playing and Afro were an inspiration to us all.
Bonnie, USA
I can't believe he's gone. This is a real shock. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Noel has left an awesome mark on music forever through his fantastic musicianship on the three Jimi Hendrix Experience albums. He will never be forgotten.
Ru Rahman, UK
I went to see Noel with his band, the Klonakilty Cowboys while I was at college, 1975-8, and while everyone wished him to play some Hendrix numbers (he wrote or co-wrote one) he didn't. But we still all enjoyed the evening, it was a great thing to have been that close to Hendrix and hear his bass player playing that legendary sound, pumping out strong and true.

The second person from one of rock history's most revolutionary, limit breaking and exciting groups ever has left the planet |
I'm sad today. The second person from one of rock history's most revolutionary, limit breaking and exciting groups ever has left the planet. JHE was a powerful trio that moved rock music into a new dimension. For me, the combination of the members in the band are a combination as fixed as the members in the Fab Four, that is not interchangeable. Thank you Noel!
Dag Ingar Misve, Norway I saw Noel Redding perform twice with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Once at the Fillmore East sometime during the late 60s. It was the most amazing concert I've ever been to. I also saw them in Macon, Georgia at a rock festival. I remember the first time I heard Are you Experienced. I remember where I was and with whom. I was never the same (musically speaking). My condolences to his family. I am so saddened.
Sylvia Mastandrea, USA
I sent Noel my first, self-produced album in 1977 after getting his address from Ceasar Glebbek of the Hendrix Information Centre in Amsterdam. I never expected a reply, but he sent me a very kind letter saying he enjoyed the music very much. He concluded by saying, "If you're ever in County Cork be sure to ring me up and we'll go jam at the local pub." I almost got on a plane right there, and now I'm sorry I didn't. We stayed in touch. I always intended to visit, but that opportunity's gone. Safe journey, Noel.
Steve Tibbetts, USA
Though another musician has been called off life's stage, the legacy of his musical contributions will live long after those alive today are gone. Thanks Noel. Now it's onto the next gig. Cheers to you and your loved ones.

I still find his playing and style a reference point |
Noel was a huge inspiration to me when I started to play the bass age 16, and 12 years later I still find his playing and style a reference point and benchmark. Thanks Noel, may God bless you.
Mark, Kent, England Last met Noel at an Arthur Lee concert in Dublin. He was up the very front grooving away with the rest of us, in fine spirit, sharing some of his memories of Arthur. Hard to believe he's gone.
David Kelly, Ireland
Noel Redding added a touch of genuine class to the Jimi Hendrix group.
Dan R. Sparkman, Japan
1967 with a bunch of heathens hurtling down the East LA highway in a Volkswagen. Lots of dope and the Experience on the 8-track box. Would never have been the same otherwise...Rest in peace dear friend and entertain God in Heaven with Jimi. He will understand...
Frulato, Thailand
Let's hope that Noel's royalties will now be forthcoming. Perhaps a music foundation for young musicians would be a fitting tribute to a great player and humble person?
Paul Cater, UK
Big hair, big sound and a big heart - thanks for the music mate, God bless!!
Peter Hewett, Toronto Canada
Goodbye Noel from all your friends in Cork. Met him once or twice but never had the chance to talk. A sad day indeed.

Noel just loved music |
I met Noel in Da Barras Pub, Clonakilty, Ireland 2 years ago. He was very friendly and would play there every Friday night for free with his musician pals. Noel just loved music, and it showed!
Clive Capp, England Rest in peace, Noel - and thanks.
Rod Ling, Australia
Noel was one of the good guys. I remember seeing him play with his post-Hendrix band, Fat Mattress, and it couldn't have been easy after the glory, but he still gave a great performance.
Phil McVey, UK
A fine musician |
Noel was a fine musician whose work was not, I believe, given its proper due simply because Jimi's genius and persona were so overwhelming. Perhaps even more criminally, the fine work he did with Fat Mattress is also underappreciated; that was an exceptional band that just didn't connect with the public as it should have.
Ed Bishop, USA Noel Redding was part of arguably the most influential blues/rock band in history (only Led Zeppelin has a claim to match them). This will remain as his legacy, despite the fact he appears to have been much underrated over the years, as well as not celebrated as widely as Mitch Mitchell, perhaps due to his leaving the Experience in not the most amicable of circumstances. Just listen to the album "Axis: Bold as Love", and it will become clear how good a bassist he was.
Pageio, England
Central Hall Chatham, around 1968. Hey Joe in the charts, The JHE live on stage............... Are You Experienced? I was after that night! Bass like it should be played - and getting rarer. Sad loss.
Kevin Saint, England
He was part of an inspirational sound which changed the face of rock |
Redding was part of an inspirational sound which changed the face of rock. Along with Mitch Mitchell they formed one of the best rhythm sections ever. He was underrated, but will certainly not be forgotten.
Laura, Scotland The music the Experience made is already proving its worth under the test of time. So dig out your records and light one up for the big guy. God bless.
Bluedog, England
Part of one of the greatest rock bands of all time, he has influenced myself and many others and hopefully will continue to do so for many years to come.
Dave Smith, South Wales
Farewell Noel, you will be missed here on Earth and cherished in Heaven when you jam with Jimi.

One of the most exciting rock bassists of all time Gearoid O Madain, Ireland |
Ar dheis De a anam - on God's right, his soul. Goodbye Noel from one of your many Irish fans. One of the most exciting rock bassists of all time. RIP.
Gearoid O Madain, Ireland I am happy that I saw the JH Experience three times live in the 70s. God bless them, they made many people happy. All the best.
BF, Netherlands
Noel. Thanks always to you and Reef knocking out Hey Joe and Voodoo Chile in Hackney last September. I will be telling my grandchildren about that night. Thanks for your unhurried time post-gig. A hilarious, lovely individual. Peace.
Duncan Evans, UK
Without Noel Redding there would have still been Jimi Hendrix, but there wouldn't have been an Experience. A superb bassist and a member of the most powerful rock trio to ever grace this planet. Rest in peace, Noel.
Ash Kemp, UK
Noel will be sadly missed from Clonakilty, West Cork, where he lived and played every week. He was a wonderful person, musician and character. God bless you Noel.
Sean Murphy, Ireland
A truly fine bassist. The music industry has lost another hero. I hope he finally gets the recognition he so richly deserves.
Paul Sorat, Thailand
His distinctive and powerful bass style is unforgettable |
Redding provided the engine-room for one of the most influential and iconic bands in rock history. His distinctive and powerful bass style is unforgettable. Noel has gone, but the JH Experience music lives on - and still sounds as fresh and exciting as it did 35 years ago.
Chris Hunter, England The man with the big hair and the big bass sound will be missed by many.
Nigel, England
A great bassist who never got the credit that he deserved for his contribution to the sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience
Rodger Edwards, UK
Noel Redding was part of the finest rock trio ever to play the electric blues. His work has, and will be referenced by budding musicians everywhere for many more years to come. He will be sadly missed. Respect!
JSB, UK
He was a really kind sweet guy |
I met Noel in a club once. He was a really kind sweet guy. It must have been hard living in Jimi's shadow. It's a real pity that he never got the royalties he deserved.
Phil Barton, UK I was fortunate enough to play guitar with Noel on a TV show in Newcastle in the mid '90s. I found him to be a charming, witty, talented man. God bless him.
Bill Lynch, USA
Living in an era dominated with pre-programmed manufactured music it can be difficult to comprehend that there was a time when musical expertise and artistry were admired and rewarded. Noel embodied this period completely and should take his place next to the many national treasures that we have recently lost.
Andrew Teague, UK
Part of the best trio ever assembled. Listen to Driving South on BBC Sessions for example of brilliant rhythm playing.
Ben, UK
Alongside Mitch Mitchell, Noel formed the greatest British rhythm section of all time. Greatly underrated, Hendrix never sounded as good without him.
