He suffered a massive heart attack at his Los Angeles home, his manager Hillard Elkins said.

A veteran of more than 70 films in a career spanning six decades, Coburn was best known for his portrayals of archetypal tough guys in such films as The Magnificent Seven, Our Man Flint and The Great Escape.

But it was for his performance as a dissolute father in the 1999 film Affliction that he received an Academy Award, for best supporting actor.

In the Great Escape he played an Australian POW with an accent almost as ludicrous as Dick Van Dyke's famous 'mockney' in Mary Poppins. But his portrayal of the vivacious escaped prisoner on the sit-up-and-beg bicycle, pedalling through the French countryside, is a memorable one. Especially when he ends up ducking behind a bar counter as a group of Gestapo are machine-gunned by the Resistance.

He will always be remembered for his outstanding role as the quiet but deadly flick knife wielding hombre in The Magnificent Seven, and his outstanding later role as Marshall Pat Garrett in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, opposite Kris Kristofferson as William Bonney (The Kid).
