| Thursday, 21 November, 2002, 12:29 GMT Your tributes: James Coburn ![]() Veteran Hollywood actor James Coburn has died at the age of 74. He suffered a massive heart attack at his Los Angeles home, his manager Hillard Elkins said. A veteran of more than 70 films in a career spanning six decades, Coburn was best known for his portrayals of archetypal tough guys in such films as The Magnificent Seven, Our Man Flint and The Great Escape. But it was for his performance as a dissolute father in the 1999 film Affliction that he received an Academy Award, for best supporting actor. Send your tributes for the Oscar-winning Hollywood actor James Coburn. This Talking Point is now closed. Read a selection of your e-mails below.
Fiona, Canada James Coburn to me was a manly figure who showed the world to fight the bad and save the good. I pray for his soul to rest in peace. He was an excellent actor. I Liked him a lot in Our man Flint, The Great escape and The Magnificent Seven. He will always be remembered.
Cathy, USA James Coburn, may he rest in peace, was an actor I never got tired of watching. What a smile! The Magnificent Seven portrayed the real James Coburn. My wife and I will remember you. How I loved James Coburn! He was elegant and devious with that smile of his. I can close my eyes and rest easy that he is in heaven now, probably playing a mean game of poker, smoking a cigar and hanging out with Steve McQueen, Lee Marvin, Yul Brynner and all the rest of the Bad Boys. Rest easy Mr Coburn. We will never forget how many wonderful performances you gave us. My prayers are with your family in this time of sadness. God bless.
Maureen Bregazzi, England James Coburn showed how to be dignified in Hollywood. His hard work and sense of humour inspired many outside of Hollywood. His vivid memory and colourful descriptions made his interviews amongst the best. And as a disciple of the master Bruce Lee, Coburn's stories served to keep the spirit of Bruce Lee alive. For me James Coburn will always be remembered for his magnificent gaze at the end of Sergio Leone's masterpiece, A Fistful of Dynamite. Like someone said, Coburn was made for Sam Peckinpah movies. My favourite was Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, with Kris Kristoferson, with music and songs by Bob Dylan. He was a wonderful actor. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. He belonged to the older generation of actors that cannot be replaced. James Coburn was a great actor who made powerful impressions upon all his young fans (I saw him first in 1963 at the age of six). He was the picture of what a man would like to be - not too nice, not too mean, but all man, and we need more like that today. He is missed, and may God bless his soul.
Sean Mojabi, Iran In the Great Escape he played an Australian POW with an accent almost as ludicrous as Dick Van Dyke's famous 'mockney' in Mary Poppins. But his portrayal of the vivacious escaped prisoner on the sit-up-and-beg bicycle, pedalling through the French countryside, is a memorable one. Especially when he ends up ducking behind a bar counter as a group of Gestapo are machine-gunned by the Resistance. I have been a James Coburn fan for well over 30 years. He was a wonderful actor and a man for all seasons. Rest in peace and thank you Mr Coburn for all the hours of entertainment through the years. Only one word can describe James Coburn. Brilliant!!!
John, USA Coburn will be missed greatly by WW2 historians for his roles in various movies. He played an Australian fighter pilot in the movie Great Escape and a rag-tag German commander in Cross of Iron. Both movies are classics and he will be missed. He was a great actor. I used to stand in queues in India to get tickets to watch his films. What a great soul. God bless him.
Doris, USA Coburn was a terrific actor and I will never forget his role as the knife throwing Brit in the Magnificent Seven. We will never see his likes again. He was a superb actor. In my book, he was among great actors of the older generation such as John Wayne, Steve McQueen, and the like. We will miss him. James Coburn played some memorable roles over the course of his career. People tend to forget about his riveting performance in Peckinpah's "Cross of Iron," arguably the greatest WW2 film ever made. One of the best and one of the last. Amazing screen presence combined with faultless quality. A James Coburn movie is what Sunday afternoons and Christmas day are all about. When you think of Coburn you think of Wayne, Mitchum and Stewart, we will never see actors of this calibre again. Very very sad to hear this news. I suddenly realise I never saw a boring Coburn performance, not something you can say about many film actors. Oh God, not another one! A true favourite of mine, having appeared in so many of my favourite movies. A real character too. He came back into the spotlight with his magnificent performance in "Affliction" (a brilliant film), winning an Oscar and a few more good roles. At least he departed this life on a career high. My deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends. What a terrible loss to them and to film lovers the world over.
Franklin MacDonald, Scotland I am the webmaster of Unofficial James Coburn Fan Club. I cannot say anything since the news came in suddenly. I'd like to say he was a magnificent actor, and will not be forgotten. May his soul rest in peace. What a wonderful actor, and an inspiration to all young actors, god bless his soul and rest in peace. An excellent actor who brought inspiration to many younger generations of film goers. The Hollywood 'greats' are getting fewer in number and Hollywood is all the poorer for it. | See also: 19 Nov 02 | Entertainment Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Talking Point stories now: Links to more Talking Point stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
