The top Nato commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, has said Afghan President Hamid Karzai has approved the conduct of the Nato operation in the country.
In statement to reporters, General McChrystal said his ''specific guidance'' was to ''continue to protect the people of Afghanistan''.
He made his remarks as Nato commanders in charge of military operations in southern Afghanistan said the threat from improvised explosive devices is far worse than they anticipated.
