Thousands of British troops have joined American and Afghan troops to launch the biggest offensive in Afghanistan since the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001.

The commander of British forces in Helmand, Brig James Cowan, addressed British troops at Camp Bastion before Operation Moshtarak began.

He said "our aim is not to crush the Taliban but to win the people" and stand "as partners with our Afghan friends".
