At least 100,000 people have fled the fierce fighting in South Waziristan between Pakistani soldiers and militants linked to both the Taliban and al-Qaeda.
Cramming as many belongings as they can on to whatever transport they have access to, many families have made the journey to the town of Dera Ismail Khan.
But when they arrive, even if they register, like this elderly man, there is little aid available for them and their families.
Some aid agencies are reported to be have been told not to give assistance to those who have fled. Officials are worried it will flow back to their tribesman, many of whom have links to the al-Qaeda fighters.
Many tell a very different story of the battles from that told by the Pakistani army. The deep knowledge the militants have of the difficult terrain, they say, makes them a challenging enemy.
