The army in Pakistan has begun what it says is a major offensive against Taliban strongholds in the north-western region of South Waziristan, near the Afghan border.
Thirty thousand troops, with air support, are moving against the stronghold of militant chief Hakimulah Mehsud and are meeting stiff resistance.
American officials call the region the most dangerous place in the world.
