A suspected car bomb in a crowded area of the Pakistani city of Peshawar on Friday has killed at least 49 people, officials say.
Friday's explosion was the latest in a series of recent bombings across north-western Pakistan and comes ahead of an operation against the Taliban in tribal regions along the Afghan border.
Doctors in hospitals close to the blast warned that the death toll could rise as many of the injured were in a critical condition.
There was pandemonium on the streets in the aftermath of the blast as grief-stricken and traumatised people either sought medical help or searched for their loved ones.
The blast left the charred skeleton of a bus flipped on its side in the middle of the road, with the twisted remains of a motorcycle nearby.
Police said many of those caught up in the bomb attack in Peshawar were women and children.
The attack is Pakistan's deadliest in six months and analysts say is a reminder of the ability of insurgents to strike in major cities, despite military operations against them.
