A car bomb in the commercial district of Peshawar, Pakistan, left at least 10 people dead, and came hours after a similar attack in the town of Bannu, also in the north-west of the country, killed six.
There were scenes of panic just after the Peshawar blast, as rescuers rushed to help victims.
Hospital officials said more than 70 people were injured, and the death toll could rise.
The explosion was heard across the city and sent a huge pall of smoke into the air.
In Bannu, a police officer examines the huge crater left by the car bomb which was outside a police station and left scores of people injured.
Several nearby houses were destroyed in the Bannu blast and a number of people are believed to have been trapped in the rubble.
Correspondents say the attacks appear to show that the Pakistani Taliban is trying to reassert itself after a series of setbacks.
