The US army has launched a major offensive against the Taliban in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province.
About 4,000 Marines as well as 650 Afghan troops are involved, supported by around 50 Nato fighter jets.
The attack is an attempt to clear the Taliban out of a river valley before Afghanistan's presidential election in August.
