The new leader of US and Nato forces in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, has taken over command in the volatile country.
He replaces David McKiernan, who was sacked by the US defence secretary after one year and whose time coincided with a surge in violence.
The Afghan President Hamid Karzai told General McChrystal that the priority would be to reduce civilian casualties.
Mark Dummet reports.
