Daylight revealed the devastation caused to the Pearl Continental Hotel in Peshawar
Rescue teams were still bringing the dead and injured from the rubble, hours after the suicide bomb attack.
Families of the victims began to hold funerals, as police said they expected the death toll to rise.
Gunmen attacked the hotel security post before a van carrying the bomb was driven in front of the building and detonated.
Dozens of people were injured and at least 18 killed.
The attack is a blow to a city where many people already live in fear, correspondents say.
Airline staff were among those caught in the explosion. Aid workers also use the hotel.
As police secured the scene, many blamed Taliban militants for the attack although there was no immediate claim of responsibility.
