The Tamil Tigers, or Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), battled the government in Colombo for quarter of a century.
The LTTE argued that the Tamil population was discriminated against by successive majority Sinhalese governments, and demanded a separate state in the north east of the country.
