The Taleban say they are withdrawing from a Pakistani district where their consolidation of power has caused deep concern in the US.
A Taleban spokesman said fighters had been ordered to pull back from Buner, just 100km (62 miles) from Islamabad.
US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has warned Pakistan that the Taleban poses an "existential threat to the democratic government of the country."
