UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has announced the immediate despatch of the humanitarian team to northern Sri Lanka , at a news conference in Brussels.
He said "too many lives are at stake," as the UN estimated 50,000 people are trapped by fighting between Tamil Tiger rebels and the Sri Lankan government.
