Sri Lankan conflict 'catastrophic'

The Tamil Tigers have accused the Sri Lankan government of shelling innocent civilians and wreaking carnage in its military onslaught on the zone still controlled by the rebels in the far north of the island.

The government has denied the claims and accused the rebels of forcing civilians to stay to use them as human shields.
