About two-hundred-and-fifty rescued child labourers have staged a demonstration in the Indian capital, Delhi, to demand tough action against the exploitation of children.

Gathering at the mausoleum of Mahatma Gandhi, the protestors passed around petitions and called on the Indian President, K.R. Narayanan, to impose a ban on children working as domestic servants.

According to a survey by the International Labour Organization, there are more than sixty-million children at work in India.

Child labour is illegal in the country, but correspondents say the ban remains ineffective due to official corruption.
