Aamir Khan and his partner shunned publicity over the wedding |
One of Bollywood's leading actors, Aamir Khan, has married his partner in a simple ceremony at his home in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay). Khan met Kiran Rao when she was assistant director on the 2001 Bollywood hit, Lagaan.
The couple are to host a three-day post-wedding celebration in Panchgani, a hill station about 260km (160 miles) south of Mumbai.
Aamir Khan is one of Bollywood's most bankable actors.
Oscar nomination
While the registration ceremony in the Bandra area of Mumbai was attended only by family members, a host of Bollywood stars are expected to be at the reception in Panchgani.

The couple met during the making of Lagaan (Land Tax), a story about a group of poor villagers who try to escape a land tax by challenging their British colonial rulers to a game of cricket.
Khan produced and starred in the film.
The movie went on to be nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Film category.
While Khan has kept silent about his relationship, the couple were seen and photographed together at numerous public functions.
They chose not to speak to the media about their wedding or the celebrations in Panchgani.
But that did not stop news reporters and television crews from standing outside his residence in Bandra from early Wednesday morning in an attempt to get a glimpse of the couple or a comment from family members.
This is the actor's second marriage. He has two children, a boy and girl, with his first wife, Reena, from whom he was recently divorced.
Aamir Khan is known for a perfectionist streak. He is very selective about the movies he takes on.
He has delivered a number of big hits such as Ghulam (Slave), Sarfarosh (Zealous) and Dil Chahta Hai (The Heart Wants).
