 Mr Tripathi says allegations against him are politically motivated |
A former minister in India's Uttar Pradesh state says he will appear before a court on Tuesday in connection with the murder of a young female poet. Amarmani Tripathi's decision came after the Supreme Court cancelled bail granted to him and his wife, Madhumani.
Mr and Mrs Tripathi deny conspiring to kill the poet, Madhumita Shukla.
She was shot dead at her home in 2003 while pregnant. Prosecutors allege she was carrying Mr Tripathi's child. He denies any relations with her.
'Intimidating witnesses'
Mr Tripathi says both he and his wife will appear in court on Tuesday.
Earlier, the Supreme Court cancelled the pair's bail following a petition by the country's main investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which alleged that Mr Tripathi was intimidating witnesses in the case.
The CBI has alleged that Mr Tripathi, who was a state minister at the time of the murder, was worried it could damage his reputation.
Investigators said DNA from the unborn foetus matched Mr Tripathi's.
He says the allegations against him are politically motivated.
Although Miss Shukla's family say she was unmarried when she died, a priest in the state says he married her to a young engineering student at the end of 2002.
