 Salman Khan believes his voice was imitated |
The voice on a tape featuring a man boasting of connections with the underworld is not that of Bollywood star Salman Khan, police say. Officers in India's western city of Mumbai (Bombay) say the voices in an alleged conversation with actress Aishwarya Rai are not his or hers.
Their statement came after an analysis by voice experts in Chandigarh.
Mr Khan's lawyer said the outcome was not a surprise as his client had always believed someone was imitating him.
Tapping
The lawyer, Dipesh Mehta, told the BBC his client was relieved but was aware all along that as a successful actor, there were many people who could imitate him well.
Mr Mehta criticised the media for claiming the tape had Mr Khan's voice without verifying it properly.
He urged the media to be more careful and said the actor's private life should not become a subject of interest.
After the media made their claims the state government admitted it had tapped Mr Khan's phone calls for two months four years ago.
Voice samples of Mr Khan and ex-girlfriend Ms Rai were taken for examination in a laboratory in the northern city of Chandigarh.
Mr Khan is no stranger controversy. He is still facing a case of hit and run in which one person was crushed to death.
