Mr Pataudi is thought one of India's greatest cricketers

Mr Pataudi, who has evaded arrest for more than a week, surrendered to prosecutors in the city of Jhajjar.

He has been charged with the killing of a black buck - a protected species of antelope - earlier this month.

Mr Pataudi comes from an aristocratic background and is regarded as one of India's greatest cricketers.

None of the six remaining suspects still at large have turned themselves in, police said.

One other suspect, who police say was the hunting party's guide, was arrested earlier.

Police remand

The case has created intense interest in India.

Mr Pataudi - nicknamed Tiger - played 46 Test matches between 1961 and 1975 and became the world's youngest national captain at 21. He led India to their first ever Test win.

He was immediately arrested when he surrendered and put on a day's police remand. He was questioned for three hours, police said.

Mr Pataudi's lawyer had earlier argued his client had not been specifically charged with shooting the black buck and should be granted pre-hearing bail.

But his plea was rejected by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday.

If found guilty, Mr Pataudi could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison with a maximum fine of 25,000 rupees ($570).

Wildlife campaigners say that although poaching is illegal in India, hunting remains popular.

They say that because police tend to ignore expeditions by the rich, famous or powerful, efforts to conserve protected animals are often hampered.
