India tested an Agni missile |
India says it has successfully tested a short-range missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. The surface-to-surface Agni missile, with a strike range of 700km, was fired from an island off the east coast state of Orissa, a defence official said.
Pakistan tested a medium-range missile last month. Both countries routinely test missiles despite peace moves.
Pakistan was not concerned by this latest test, a foreign affairs official was quoted as saying by AFP.
During recent talks, Delhi and Islamabad agreed to renew a ban on nuclear weapons tests, to notify each other about impending missile tests and to set up a hotline to alert each other to potential nuclear risks.
