Five Indian policemen have died after an avalanche buried them in the Himalayas in northern India, an official said. The policemen, who were trained mountaineers, were returning from a trek on a glacier in Uttaranchal state when the incident happened.
They were part of a 14-member team of policemen from the eastern city of Calcutta (also known as Kolkata).
Two policemen sustained slight injuries in the avalanche on Wednesday night.
The remaining seven members of the team were unhurt.
Private trek
The deputy commissioner of Calcutta police, Sanjay Mukherjee, told the BBC that rescuers had recovered one body and were looking for the remaining four victims.
He said that the policemen, who belonged to the city's crack Rapid Action Force, were on a private trek.
The Sunderdunga glacier, where the incident happened, is 1,730m above sea level and has always posed a major challenge for adventure tourists and trekkers.
Last year, six policemen died in the region on their way to a mountain.
