About 100 volunteers are planning to climb Mount Everest to clear the world's highest mountain of tonnes of rubbish, according to Chinese media. The China Daily says the group aims to clear an estimated 615 tonnes of rubbish from Everest's upper slopes during the trip in September.
They will be climbing at least 6,500 metres (22,000 feet) above sea level.
The China Association for Scientific Expedition, said the waste was damaging the mountain's ecological balance.
"Much waste left behind has resulted in a worsened ecological situation there," the group's president Gao Dengyi was quoted as saying.
The rubbish has accumulated over decades of mountaineering.
Between 1921 and 1960, there were just 15 expeditions to the 8,848 metre-high (29,500 feet-high) peak that straddles Nepal and Tibet.
Now, around 20,000 people are believed to visit the region every year.
