Gustad was shooting at a railway station for a new film

He has been charged with manslaughter, as well as making a false complaint, negligence during shooting and fabricating evidence.

Nadia Khan was hit by a train on a shoot in Bombay (Mumbai).

The 27-year-old film and media graduate from London was helping to make Mr Gustad's new film Bombay Central.

Another member of the film crew, Ashish Udeshi, was also arrested.

'Witness' resigns

Mr Guztad and Mr Udeshi appeared before a Bombay court on Wednesday.

The judge remanded them in police custody till 10 June. If found guilty of manslaughter, Mr Gustad could be imprisoned for up to 10 years.

Meanwhile, a costume designer working on the film has resigned after Mr Gustad's arrest.

Shruti Desai, who says she witnessed Ms Khan's death, told the BBC Asian Network that she felt unable to continue working on the film.

The Bombay railway police said Mr Gustad's crew did not have permission to shoot on the platform and the track where the incident happened.

'Road accident'

Ms Khan was talking on her mobile phone on the railway track when she was killed, Mid-Day newspaper reported.

Indian police have confirmed the death was initially reported to them as a road accident.

"I can't reveal many details of the case now as our investigations are ongoing, but it is a case of a train accident," said a police spokesman.

Mr Guztad told the Associated Press on Tuesday that he welcomed the investigation and that he and his crew voluntarily went to the police.

The railways have reportedly declined further permission to Mr Gustad to continue shooting his film.

Actor Vijay Raaz, who stars in Bombay Central, said he was "shocked and upset" after hearing that Ms Khan had been hit by the train.
