Shoaib Akhtar dismisses the charge |
A disgruntled cricket fan is taking legal action against Pakistan ace bowler Shoaib Akhtar alleging he faked a hand injury. The fan says the injury was fabricated during the last match of his side's Test series against India. Pakistan lost the series.
The Pakistan fan has demanded 100m rupees damages ($1.7m) within 15 days or he will take his case to the courts.
Shoaib is due to return to Durham for the English county cricket season.
Strong denial
The recriminations have been flying since Pakistan's Test series defeat by their arch-rival India last week.
In the final match, with Pakistan staring defeat in the face, Shoaib left the field saying he had a wrist injury.
But he returned to the field to bat on the last day and knocked a run of fours and a six in rapid order.
And a subsequent X-ray revealed no trace of bruising or fracture, evidence enough for cricket fan Babar Ali to launch a multi-million-rupee case against the star.
Mr Ali's lawyer said Shoaib had let the whole nation down.
The cricketer, who is currently in India shooting a commercial, has strenuously denied faking injury.
The player and the team coach, Javed Miandad, are taking the rap for Pakistan's defeat.
But the Pakistan Cricket Board, which has formed a medical commission to investigate the injuries of several players, is not above legal action either.
A constitutional petition has been filed in a provincial high court demanding an inquiry into the board's role in what the petitioner called Pakistan's cricketing debacle against India.
