A decline in film-goers has been blamed on increased vulgarity |
Feuding film producers and artistes in Bangladesh have ended a strike following negotiations between the two groups brokered by Information Minister Tariqul Islam. The two groups began an indefinite strike on Saturday, accusing each other of bringing obscenity to Bengali movies.
In a meeting with the minister the two sides gave an undertaking not to promote vulgar material or act in obscene films.
Bangladesh produces nearly 100 Bengali films each year but the number of film-goers is on the decline and many have blamed nudity and obscenity in the films.
Police deployed
On Sunday in the capital, Dhaka, actors, actresses and directors staged a demonstration in front of the Film Development Corporation, the main body of film-making in the country.
Film producers and distributors held their own demonstration inside the building.
The actors and directors denied allegations they were responsible for growing vulgarity in films.
They published a list of 13 producer-directors they claimed had been making obscene films.
In turn, the film producers decided to ban five artistes and directors from their future projects.
Police were deployed around the Film Development Corporation to prevent the two groups clashing.
The two groups also lodged complaints with the government.
