A prominent political leader of the lower-caste Dalits in India, Kanshi Ram, has been taken to hospital after suffering a stroke during a trip to the southern city of Hyderabad. Doctors at the Institute of Medical Sciences said his condition was stable.
Correspondents say Mr Ram, 69, emerged as the symbol of a growing political role for the Dalits in Indian politics in the 1980s.
