Manipur no longer to be 'dry'
The state government in Manipur, in north-east India, is to end the prohibition of alcohol after 12 years.

The minister for tax duties said the state would earn about $10m in revenue once the ban was lifted.

The decision will upset ethnic organisations and feminist groups who oppose the sale of alcohol.

Women's groups are opposed because they fear men will waste their wages on excessive consumption, causing hardship.

The ban was imposed after separatist rebels burned down some shops selling liquor, saying alcohol caused major social problems.
