Savita says she was beaten by her bridegroom

Dowry demands - which are common but illegal in India - have attracted much media attention in the past 10 days after a bride-to-be called off her marriage and reported her bridegroom to the police.

The Nisha Sharma case led to several other girls in Delhi protesting at dowry demands.

Police say that in the latest case, a 22-year-old woman, Savita, was married to a man from Dhasa village in Delhi on Sunday and returned two days later saying her in-laws were demanding more dowry.

More demands

"I will not go back to my husband, because he misbehaved with me," Savita told the BBC.

The bride's family had already given about $2,100 to the groom's family but they continued to demand more.

After the bride's family informed the police the husband was arrested for demanding a dowry, causing harassment and for criminal intimidation.

Meanwhile, a Delhi court has rejected bail applications the would-be bridegroom and his mother in the Nisha Sharma case.

The court rejected the applications saying the case was pending.
