Bodies of Indian miners retrieved

Distraught relatives waited in vain for two days
Rescuers in India's south-eastern Andhra Pradesh state have retrieved the bodies of 17 men who died after water burst through a coal mine wall on Monday.

The authorities pumped out thousands of gallons of water over 48 hours before recovering the bodies on Wednesday.

Distraught relatives waited at the surface as the bodies were brought up on stretchers.

The miners were trapped 100 metres (330 feet) underground when water broke through the wall and rose to the 65-metre level.

The mine is in Karimnagar district, 220 kilometres (140 miles) north of the state capital, Hyderabad.

A High Court judge is investigating the cause of the worst accident suffered by the Singareni Collieries Company in the town of Godavari Khani.

Government officials say the families of the victims will receive compensation.
