The authorities in the west Indian state of Maharashtra have arrested and taken to hospital the prominent activist, Medha Patkar. Her condition is said to have worsened after six days of a hunger strike.
Medha Patkar, along with several other activists, had been on hunger strike outside the commissioner's office in the town of Nasik.
She was protesting against the lack of government help given to those people displaced by the creation of the Narmada river dam.
A spokesman for the Save Narmada Movement, Pervin Jehangir, told the BBC that the other activists had been detained by police at the Dev Lali station.
Medha Patkar created the Narmada protest movement and has found supporters among high-profile figures such as the Indian author, Arundhati Roy.
