The arrest was made in a southern Punjab town nearly 100 kilometres (60 miles) west of Multan. A reward of two million rupees (more than $30,000) was offered for 30-year-old Abdul Hayee who was said to be a suspect in a number of sectarian attacks.
Speaking to the BBC from the southern Punjab town of Muzaffargarh, District Police Chief Salman Chaudhri said the man was the head of a spiritual cell within an outlawed Sunni group, Lashkar-i-Jhangavi.
The organisation has been linked to the 2002 murder of Pearl, a Wall Street Journal reporter, as well as a Karachi car bombing that same year that killed 14, including 11 Frenchmen.
Mr Chaudhri added that Abdul Hayee had received training in suicide bombing in Afghanistan.
