Another fatal attack in Indian-administered Kashmir has left four family members dead and three injured, according to police.

Gunmen stormed a house in the village of Riban, near the town of Sopor, 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of the summer capital Srinagar on Friday night.

They appear to have opened fire indiscriminately, killing four males, one of whom was a six-year-old child, one report suggested.

An assemblyman was also mourned after his death on Friday

The violence came on the same night a ruling party assemblyman, Abdul Aziz Mir, and three women died in separate incidents in the south of the state.

One of the victims of the latest attack was the owner of the house, Bulam Kajar Dar, said the French news agency AFP. He died later in hospital.

The dead child was thought to be his grandson.

Three women, also thought to be members of the Muslim family, were wounded.

No motive has yet been identified for the attack and no group has admitted carrying out the attack.

No lull in violence

More than a dozen guerrilla groups are fighting Indian rule in Jammu and Kashmir.

Kashmir's new chief minister, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, has adopted a more conciliatory approach towards the insurgency against Indian rule in Kashmir.

However, the violence has continued uninterrupted since his government came to power last month.

India accuses Pakistan of arming Islamic gunmen and sending them across the border. Pakistan protests that it supports only a legitimate struggle for self-determination.
