An underworld figure wanted by Indian police in connection with a series of bomb attacks in Bombay, also known as Mumbai, has been arrested in Dubai, the Indian Government says.

Speaking in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, Home Minister LK Advani said Anees Ibrahim, had been arrested in connection with the attacks in 1993.

Anees Ibrahim is the younger brother of underworld boss Dawood Ibrahim.

He had been arrested by the Dubai police on two earlier occasions - but was released due to lack of evidence.

Extradition

A number of charges, including extortion and murder, have been registered against him by the Indian police.

Officers of India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrived in Dubai on Sunday to secure the extradition of the Mr Ibrahim under an extradition treaty the two countries signed in October 1999.

His brother, Dawood Ibrahim is alleged to have built up an underworld empire in Bombay before fleeing to Dubai in the mid-1990s.

He is also accused by the Indian Government of orchestrating the bomb attacks in Bombay in 1993 in retaliation for the destruction of the mosque in Ayodhya by Hindu extremists.

Mr Advani said: "We have an extradition treaty with the UAE... we hope to get him back like we managed to get a prime accused in the Calcutta shootout case."

The UAE had earlier helped India by extraditing Aftab Ansari and two others accused of involvement in a bomb blast outside the American Center in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta.
